Show Notes

The internet went wild when Michelle Obama admitted on her new podcast that she was suffering from “low-grade” depression. What do we all feel about our current culture of anxiety and depression? Are people ashamed? Is the stigma gone? Are there differences among white women and Black women? And how does that wellness industry fit into all of this? ### Sources: [https://www.vulture.com/2017/01/black-ish-recap-season-3-episode-13.html](https://www.vulture.com/2017/01/black-ish-recap-season-3-episode-13.html) [https://www.instagram.com/theviragoproject/](https://www.instagram.com/theviragoproject/) [https://thelovelandfoundation.org/](https://thelovelandfoundation.org/) [https://therapyforblackgirls.com/](https://therapyforblackgirls.com/) [https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/06/us/michelle-obama-coronavirus-depression-trnd/index.html](https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/06/us/michelle-obama-coronavirus-depression-trnd/index.html) [https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/08/us/michelle-obama-depression-black-women-wellness-trnd/index.html](https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/08/us/michelle-obama-depression-black-women-wellness-trnd/index.html) [https://howyouheal.com/whitewashing-wellness/](https://howyouheal.com/whitewashing-wellness/) [https://www.athleteally.org/decolonizing-fitness/](https://www.athleteally.org/decolonizing-fitness/) [https://www.decolonizingwellnessto.com/home-1](https://www.decolonizingwellnessto.com/home-1) [https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/06/12/mental-health-george-floyd-census/?arc404=true](https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/06/12/mental-health-george-floyd-census/?arc404=true) -- ### Prompts Want to talk about this with your friends? The Olympics

Alex and Lenya have more to discuss about the Olympics!   Some people are saying they only turn on the Olympics to watch the Black athletes. What does this mean to them, and to the Black Community? Does it help? What if someone were to just watch the white athletes?    There’s more discussion about the media and their portrayal of Black olympians. And why, even though the Black equestrian community is growing, are there no Black equestrians at the Olympics?   This, and much more. Get Off My Lawn with Alexandra’s sister Candice D’Italia Gray

Alexandra’s sister, Candice, joins to discuss race and womanhood, in TikTok, in lacrosse, in being a mother, and in growing older. Candice D’Italia Gray is a former fourth grade teacher and reading specialist.  She taught in Inner City Baltimore and Southside Chicago. Twenty years later, her students still contact her and call her the teacher that made them love to learn. Vet tech, animal rescue volunteer, and girls’ lacrosse coach, Candice lives in a predominantly white  community in Wisconsin and raises her two children to not only believe in love and equality for all, but to fight for those values in the face of bias and prejudice.  What would you do as a mother, raising a middle school girl who wants to do everything she sees on TikTok? Candice tells Lenya and Alexandra all about what she does to protect her daughter, but also allow freedom to explore and experiment. Its a tough balance. After her son enjoyed lacrosse in school, Candice’s daughter wanted to play too, so Candice learned to coach lacrosse so her daughter could join the girl’s team. Candice explains about sexism, not only in sports, but just in the default way that we all walk through the world. Ending the episode with a few thoughts on aging, what it feels like, and what wisdom comes with it.  -- Please **rate and review** this podcast if you enjoyed it; reviews greatly help new listeners see this podcast is worth their time.
